Routines
A 10-minute daily routine for a calmer dog
You don't need an hour a day to make a difference. A short routine done consistently often does more than a long session once a week. Here's a 10-minute routine you can fit in before work or while dinner cooks.
The routine
| Minutes | What to do |
|---|---|
| 0–3 | Sniff. Scatter a handful of kibble on a rug or in the yard and let your dog find it. |
| 3–7 | Think. Practice two cues: one your dog knows well, one that's new. Short reps, lots of rewards. |
| 7–10 | Settle. Ask your dog to lie on a mat. Drop a treat every few seconds while they stay relaxed, then give a chew. |
Why it works
Sniffing and problem-solving are tiring in a different way from physical exercise. Ending with a "settle" teaches your dog what calm looks like, so it becomes a habit rather than an accident.
Make it stick
- Do it at the same time each day, such as before you leave for work.
- Keep a small jar of treats where you'll do it.
- Rotate the new cue every few days so it stays interesting.
Note: this routine adds to daily walks and play; it doesn't replace them.
